HRAC GROUP 9 (LEGACY G) RESISTANT HORSEWEED
(Conyza canadensis)

Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase HRAC Group 9 (Legacy G)

Czech Republic
INTRODUCTION HORSEWEED
Horseweed (Conyza canadensis) is a dicot weed in the Asteraceae family.  In Czech Republic this weed first evolved resistance to Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides in 2007 and infests Railways.   Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides are known as Inhibition of Enolpyruvyl Shikimate Phosphate Synthase (Inhibition of EPSP synthase).  Research has shown that these particular biotypes are resistant to glyphosate and they may be cross-resistant to other Group 9 (Legacy G) herbicides.

The 'Group' letters/numbers that you see throughout this web site refer to the classification of herbicides by their site of action. To see a full list of herbicides and HRAC herbicide classifications click here.

If we do not have a picture for this weed, or you can provide a better picture (scan, digital camera etc) please please e-mail it to us.

GENERAL

Daniela Chodová
General A horseweed (Conyza canadensis) biotype that was not controlled by glyphosate has been discovered at the railway station in Prague-Bubny. The active ingredient glyphosate has been regularly used at the station since 2000. Single green horseweed plants in various developmental stages were found on the area treated with glyphosate. These plants were transferred to the greenhouse. The plants were treated with 720 g.ha-1 glyphosate two weeks after enrooting in pots. A part of the plants survived and they were grown to the matured seeds. Plants grown up from the seeds were sprayed with 720 g.ha-1 glyphosate. Some plants died. Plants, which only wilted and turned yellow moderately, and which in a few weeks created new leaves in the centre of rosettes, were considered resistant. These resistant plants were further grown, treated with glyphosate at dose of 720 g.ha-1 at the 10-30-leaf stage again, and used for determination of accumulation of shikimic acid. Plants obtained from the seeds originated from localities without herbicide applications (susceptible) were sprayed at the same developmental stage. A significant increase in shikimic acid content compared to the control was measured in the susceptible and resistant plants in 3 days. A remarkable decrease in shikimic acid content was observed 7 days after herbicide application in resistant plants, while multiple increase was found in the susceptible plants.

ACADEMIC ASPECTS

Confirmation Tests

Field, Greenhouse, and Laboratory trials comparing a known susceptible Horseweed biotype with this Horseweed biotype have been used to confirm resistance. For further information on the tests conducted please contact the local weed scientists that provided this information.

Genetics

Genetic studies on HRAC Group 9 resistant Horseweed have not been reported to the site.  There may be a note below or an article discussing the genetics of this biotype in the Fact Sheets and Other Literature

Mechanism of Resistance

The mechanism of resistance for this biotype is either unknown or has not been entered in the database.  If you know anything about the mechanism of resistance for this biotype then please update the database.

Relative Fitness

There is no record of differences in fitness or competitiveness of these resistant biotypes when compared to that of normal susceptible biotypes.  If you have any information pertaining to the fitness of Group 9 (Legacy G) resistant Horseweed from Czech Republic please update the database.
